Treatment of whatever type of diabetes mellitus usually includes keeping to a special diabetic diet. Its aim is to help keep the glucose levels normal, lose weight, prevent cardiovascular complications, and generally increase life expectancy. Today, there exist a number of different approaches and diets, and it is complicated to distinguish one as the best among others. The most important thing is that a specific diabetic diet should be recommended by your health care provider.

Carbohydrates and Diabetic Diet

There still exists a controversy in the question of how many carbohydrates should be consumed by a patient suffering from diabetes mellitus. While the American Diabetes Association (ADA) recommends keeping to a diet with 60-70% of carbohydrates, some researchers recommend diabetic diets with only 40% of carbohydrates, and some – with more than 75% of carbohydrates of caloric intake. Other dietary recommendations concerning carbohydrates speak of the benefits of combining carbohydrates with dietary fibre. Such combination causes smaller glycaemic rise in comparison with consuming carbohydrates alone. Interestingly, table sugar that is often thought to trigger diabetes is included to the diabetic diet. In fact, table sugar does not raise the glucose levels as much as other sources carbohydrates with the same amount of calories.

Specific Diets

The following specific diets have already become very popular and are considered to be very effective in patients with diabetes mellitus.

Pritikin Diet is rich on carbohydrates and rouphage. It includes whole grains, fruits, vegetables, etc.

G.I. Diet is aimed at lowering the glycaemic index of a person’s diet. It avoids potatoes and white bread while opting for whole grains, legumes, and multigrain breads.

Low Carb Diet minimizes the complications of insulin resistance by reducing the amounts of consumed carbohydrates. According to this diet, carbohydrates are gradually replaced by fatty food like meat, nuts, fish, eggs, vegetables, etc.

High Fiber Diet is recommended by the American Diabetes Association. It was proven that high fiber diet helps reach good glycaemic control as effectively as anti-diabetic medications.

Paleolithic Diet is thought to improve glucose tolerance in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus. The research on the effectiveness of this diet continues.

Vegan Diet is characterized by the same level of effectiveness as the ADA-recommended diet. It was previously noticed that the incidence of diabetes mellitus is much lower in people keeping to a vegan diet, which eliminates animal products.
