Food Intake is of much Importance for the Diabetics

It has a long history, for the first diet for the people who suffer diabetes was designed in 3500 B.C. in Egypt and had mass usage in the ancient India, approximately 2000 year ago, while being introduced by Charaka and Sushruta. A bit later, in the eighteenth century, the diet was denied as the one that can influence the amount of glycosuria, reducing it and causing even more harm to the diabetics. Diabetes is much associated with the name of the dietician Frederick Allen, who introduced insulin and mentioned the term low-calorie diet as the one that can bring no harm to the diabetic’s health. This new approach, can hardly be called curable for it does not influence the ability to cure, but is more of the preventive nature, making it possible to eliminate the harm of the disease. Frederick Banting was the first scientist who used insulin and gave his patients chance for happy living with the least restricted nutrition.

Later, in the middle of the 20th century, the diet based on the exchange scheme was firstly introduced by American Diabetes Association. It was the one that merely allowed people to eat the food that had similar nutritional value as the one they would like to eat. Swapping as it is called now, made it possible to supply the organism with the necessary elements, not including the food that is negatively influential for it.

Modern type of diabetic diet includes the mathematically estimated nutritional needs of the diabetics that comprises total amount of daily calories, fat, protein and carbohydrates. This calculation was a basis of daily menu of the people who suffer from diabetes. According to this scheme, the amount of the calories in the daily food should count from 50% to 60% carbohydrates, from 12% to 20% proteins, and not more than 30% fat, only 10% of which may be a saturated fat, for it is the most harmful food for the diabetics.

Considering the diabetic intake, the list of recommendations was composed:

  • The food should not create rises and falls in glucose level of the blood, so that Glycemic Index is to be kept low.
  • The protective is the diet which is high in fiber, for it slows down the digestion and absorption of carbohydrate and positively influences the sensitivity of the body tissues to insulin, not causing blood sugar rise. High fat food as well as the food containing refined carbohydrates is required to be avoided. Among the products to be eaten without restrictions are: cereals, dried beans, peas, fruits, vegetables, legumes, oats, fruits and lentils.
  • The food should protect against the possible arteries hardening. Thus, the one may easily eat cold water fish like salmon, tuna, herring, mackerel, etc.
  • No sugar means that special artificial sweeteners are the alternative to the traditional one. It is better to eat aspartame and saccharine than to eat sugar.
  • The food is to protect against diabetes neuropathy, so should be mostly oriented on the usage of borage, blackcurrant and primrose oil.
  • Alpha-lipoic acid is an integral part of the diabetic diet for it is a vitamin that positively influences the intake of the glucose and patient’s nerves, not damaging them.

From all said above it becomes clear that the diet, more or less clearly distinguished, is the right way to protect oneself from the damaging influence of the disease. Healthy lifestyle can prevent the diabetic cases or even can reverse the problem. Eating healthy, keeping weight in regular check and getting exercises are the right ways to success. Correct eating is nothing else but the combination of three tips: what, when and how much to eat. Predominantly plant food the amount of carbohydrates in which is limited is the good solution as one may say. Regular eating and snaking help to control the level of the sugar in the blood and to keep it more or less constant.

Diabetic diet

The diabetic diet should include the limits amount of sugar, but does not mean its absolute absence. However, the sweets are said to bring the maximum joy while being eaten on special occasions. Treats for reason as they are said are expected to be used in moderated amounts. It is explained by the fact that sweets bring surplus amount of carbohydrates. By this, either sweets or other carbohydrate-rich food should be cut down. Among the products that are rich on carbohydrates is flour containing food, such as crackers, bread, cookies, fruit, potatoes, rice and corn. Tracking the amount of carbohydrates is not as difficult as one may mistakenly think. The most vital thing here is to reduce the sugar consumption while following the set of requirements. The diet is said to be effective in case one decides about soda, ice cream or cake substitution on the sparkling water, frozen fruit and cheese. The next thing is to control the presence of the sweets in one’s house, so that temptation will appear only while being away from home. Long awaited dessert should be tried, but only being shared with a friend. It will help to savor every single particle of it and will sweeten a treat of deal.

Carbohydrates, which are said to have a detrimental effect on the human body, can not be avoided, but should be precisely considered. One is to be smart about the ways how to balance the diet. Thus, fruits and vegetables which offer various minerals, fiber, and vitamins are a better choice while being compared to candies, snacks, and white flour containing food and rice. Moreover, carbohydrates are of complex nature. It is whole-grain food, quinoa, rolled oat, steel cut that comprise longer digested carbohydrates, which help to keep the feeling of fullness.

Regular eating is an essential part of diabetic’s diet. It is because of the regular eating that the body is easier regulating the level of the sugar in the blood. Moreover, in case of small portions and meal schedule the weight is under the constant control. Every breakfast is to be a good one, while it gives the energy for the whole day and supplies the blood with the essential level of sugar. One is to forget about big portions and irregular eating habit, for 3 times more frequently eaten food will help to forget about the feeling of hunger. The best formula for the eater is to be attentive about what the body says. It is better to full the stomach for 80 per cent and then to wait for 20-25 minutes.

Good appetite is not a bad thing if manageable. This should be especially considered if one suffers from diabetes. Taking manageable steps, one will slowly but confidently move to the healthier diet and will help the body undergo the stress of food elimination.
